What GWO Basic Safety Training Actually Covers — and Who Needs It

GWO BST is the entry ticket to most wind sites worldwide. Here is what the modules involve, how long they take, and how refresher training keeps the certificate valid.

If you are joining a wind farm construction crew, an operations and maintenance team, or a turbine manufacturer's field service group, the first question a site manager asks is: "Have you got your BST?"

GWO Basic Safety Training is the Global Wind Organisation's standard for the safety competence every technician needs before working on a turbine. It is recognised across GWO member companies worldwide, which means a certificate earned at an accredited centre in India is accepted on a site in Europe, and vice versa.

The modules

BST is modular. The modules a technician needs depend on where they work:

Module What it covers Onshore Offshore
First Aid Recognising and responding to injuries and illness in the turbine environment, CPR and AED use Required Required
Manual Handling Reducing musculoskeletal injury when moving tools and components in confined turbine spaces Required Required
Fire Awareness Fire prevention, evaluating a fire, using extinguishers and evacuating a turbine Required Required
Working at Heights Fall protection PPE, ladder and hatch use, and evacuation and rescue from a turbine Required Required
Sea Survival Transfer to and from vessels, survival at sea, and offshore-specific emergency response — Required

Each module has its own learning objectives set by the GWO standard, so the content does not vary between training providers — only the quality of delivery does.

How long it takes

The four onshore modules are typically delivered as a five-day block, with Sea Survival adding a further day for offshore technicians. The exact schedule depends on the provider's timetable; ours is on the GWO Wind training pages.

The balance is heavily practical. Working at Heights, in particular, is spent in harnesses on a training structure, practising climbs, hatch transitions, evacuation descents and the rescue of a colleague — because that is what the certificate promises a site manager you can do.

Validity and refreshers

A BST module certificate is valid for 24 months. Before it expires, the technician completes the corresponding BST Refresher module, which is shorter than the initial training and focuses on practical revision. Let a certificate lapse, and the full initial module must be repeated.

Records are held in WINDA, the GWO training record database. Every technician needs a WINDA ID before training; the provider uploads the completed modules against it, and any site can verify the certificate there.

Who needs BST — and who needs more

BST is the baseline for anyone working in or on a turbine: construction, installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance, blade repair and inspection technicians. Site rules commonly extend it to supervisors and engineers who climb, even occasionally.

It is not the end of the ladder. Depending on the role, technicians may also need:

  • Basic Technical Training (BTT) — mechanical, electrical and hydraulic fundamentals for those new to the industry
  • Advanced Rescue Training (ART) — for the members of a site rescue team
  • Blade Repair, Enhanced First Aid and other specialist standards

The GWO training overview sets out how these fit together.

Choosing where to train

Because the standard fixes the content, choose a provider on the things it does not fix:

  • Is the working-at-heights structure a real climbing environment or a step ladder in a classroom?
  • Are instructors current in the industry, not just certified to teach?
  • Is the centre GWO-certified for every module offered, with certificates uploaded to WINDA promptly?
  • Can the provider run training at your site when a whole crew needs it?

Frequently asked questions

How long is a GWO BST certificate valid?
Each module is valid for 24 months. Complete the BST Refresher module before expiry to keep it current; if it lapses, the full initial module must be repeated.
Do I need a WINDA ID before training?
Yes. Every technician registers for a WINDA ID before the course so the provider can upload the completed modules against it.
