Worker performing a seal check on a respirator
First Aid, Health & Medicine | Training Programme

Protection that only works when it seals.

Respiratory protective equipment fails quietly. This programme covers selecting the right device for the hazard, fitting it correctly and maintaining it.

Worker performing a seal check on a respirator

Overview

Respiratory protective equipment sits at the bottom of the hierarchy of control, and it fails quietly. A respirator that does not seal to the face lets contaminated air in around the edges while the wearer still feels protected.

This programme is therefore about the seal as much as the filter: choosing the device for the actual hazard rather than the nearest mask, fitting and checking it on the person who will wear it, and knowing when a filter or a device has reached the end of its life.

What the programme covers

  • Respiratory hazards — dust, fume, vapour, gas and oxygen deficiency
  • Filtering devices and their assigned limits
  • Supplied-air and self-contained equipment
  • Face fit, seal checks and facial hair
  • Storage, cleaning and filter change
  • Recognising when a device must be withdrawn
