GWO GWO Slinger Signaller (SLS) Training

Safe slinging and signalling practice during lifting operations.

Training overview

Slinger Signaller Training covers attaching and detaching loads from crane lifting attachments, and the clear, unambiguous signalling that keeps a lift controlled from start to finish. It is aimed at personnel who carry out straightforward lifting operations against an established lift plan covering recognised hazards.

A recurring theme of the standard is authority: participants are trained to have the knowledge, skill and confidence to stop an unsafe work situation, not merely to follow instructions. The training also covers limited and blind lifts, where more than one signaller is needed and communication has to be exact.

Why this training matters

Lifting operations concentrate risk into a few minutes, and most incidents stem from a load being attached incorrectly or a signal being misread. Consistent slinging and signalling practice removes that ambiguity.

What you will learn

  • Attach and detach loads to crane lifting attachments independently
  • Direct safe crane movement, including multiple signallers during limited or blind lifts
  • Conduct visual inspections of lifting accessories and loads
  • Sling different load types according to weight, centre of gravity, shape and size
  • Carry out generic routine lifts to a lift plan independently
  • Ensure correct equipment application and maintenance, and report defects
  • Stop an unsafe work situation

Training pathways

Initial Training

Practical training in load attachment and signalling, applied to wind site lifting activity.

Duration: 13 hours 40 minutes total contact time

Key knowledge

  • Load characteristics — weight, centre of gravity, shape and size
  • Lift plans and how they govern a routine lift
  • Signalling conventions, including multi-signaller arrangements
  • Inspection criteria for lifting accessories

Practical skills

  • Attaching and detaching loads to crane lifting attachments
  • Directing crane movement by signal
  • Visually inspecting lifting accessories and loads before use
  • Slinging varied load types correctly

Competencies

  • Carry out generic routine lifts to a lift plan independently
  • Direct safe crane movement including during limited or blind lifts
  • Identify and report equipment defects
  • Stop an unsafe work situation

Key learning outcomes

  • Safe slinging practice
  • Communication and signalling
  • Visual inspection of lifting accessories
  • Working safely around lifting activity

Practical training

Practical signalling and load-attachment exercises, including lifts where the signaller cannot see the whole operation.

Important information

  • Maximum 8 hours contact time per training day.
